Artemisia Gentileschi - Self Portrait as an Allegory of Painting

gentileschi_allegoria.jpg

For the Raison D'Etre Theatre Company's play Taliswoman, based on the life of Artemisia, I have been given the Allegory of Painting to interpret. I could use a piece of work I've already made, but the urge to make something new is strong, so using some of the symbolism, the golden mask pendant, the loose strands of hair and the colours of her dress. Along with the story of her torture using the sibille around her fingers and her cries to Agostini of "Is this the ring you promised me?" I think I can make a new piece of work.

The work will be displayed in the Guildhall in Leicester in November alongside a symposium of artists and its my first work as an artist that is paying me. I've had paid work as a community artist, but not for my own work.

Post Festival

Trying not to have post festival blues, but its been really hard.

We had a fantastic time, drank too much alcohol, made some hobby horses, watched a Laurel & Hardy film, saw the Glitzy Bag Hags twice! (that was a real treat) before landing back to reality with a very hard bump.

One of my favourite things was the bird house, which was burnt on Sunday night to a herald of fireworks, releasing all the wishes and hopes people had written in it, to the rebirth of fire. It was very beautiful.
